Stellar Guitar Students
In an attempt to showcase some of the talent and hard work going on here at the shop I’d like to welcome you to the latest addition to the web site, Stellar Guitar Students. Periodically, I will be featuring one student from my schedule that represents diligence in practicing, willingness to learn, and just an overall dedication to the guitar.
My next Stellar Guitar Student is :
Davis Deaton
Davis is 13 years old and is a student at Grizzell Middle School. He has studied with me now for about 2 years now. I’m really proud of Davis because he’s done something to me that is very difficult. I should explain.
Davis’ first instrument is a Double Bass. He has been programmed for three years to be able to read music in Bass Clef from the school system. When he had studied with me for a while he had expressed interest in learning to read guitar sheet music. Well, for one, it’s rare these days for me to have anyone, especially a younger kid, ask to learn to read music. In as much, he would have to relearn almost everything he knew about reading music. He would have to learn how to think Treble Clef while still playing Bass Clef at school. That’s no small feet. For those of you who don’t know, it would be like being suddenly forced to do everything with your non-dominant hand or like being able to speak two different languages.
He was amazingly open to starting from scratch and he caught on very fast. His sight reading has improved tremendously and he’s starting to get the hang of making a sterile page with black dots come to life. On top of all that, Davis is the young man that has contributed more odd words to my vocabulary than any student yet and he will absolutely make me account for every thing I say sometimes just to keep me on my toes. I don’t know who’s teaching who at times, but we always have fun.
Davis is a big fan of some of the great classic rock bands like, U2, Rolling Stones, Beatles, ACDC, and Queen. When he’s not rocking a Mel Bay book, I hear he’s pretty addicted to Mind Craft.
Awesome job, Davis…I’m really proud of all your work!
